The Sentencing in Absentia Session of Dictator Mangesto

On Tuesday 12 December 2006, the sentencing session of "Red Terror" case was held. The former Ethiopian dictator; Mangesto Hella Miriam was trialed in absentia with conventions of murdering or causing the disappearance of dozens of thousands of Ethiopian people during the period from 1977 to 1978.

Mangesto's reign extended from 1977 to 1991. He came to power in consequence of a military coup d'etat against the Emperor. Ethiopia witnessed many economical and social disasters during his era. Currently, Mangesto resides in Zimbabwe, since he was exiled in 1991.

Mangesto was trialed along with 73 officials from his regime, since 13 December 1994. The trial is still subject to court consideration for more than ten years now. Hella Miriam is expected to face death sentence if the court proved him guilty.
