A governmental human rights council resigns

28/3/2005

Members of the Turkish consultant committee for human rights- a governmental committee for human rights- their resignations as the first step in protesting on the council's being imaginary formal council and to confirm that human rights is not a way to beautify the governmental image in this field.

The Turkish picture and its bad record in human rights besides the desire to affiliate to the European Union were the reason behind forming this committee. At the same time the Turkish government thought it is enough to beautify its image and to obscure their bad records in human rights and especially regarding the Kurdish minority rights.

The resignation is considered a painful hit to Turkey indicates that forming human rights councils is not a target for itself but a way that could be helpful in obligating the state to respect human rights of its citizens.

This also is a step scandalizes the governmental human rights councils either in Turkey or all over the Arab world and attracts attention to the resigned persons' commitment to human rights. Would there be any Arab council doing the same?
