Egypt: Electing the Egyptian President from Many Candidates
February 26, 2005
The Egyptian Campaign/Movement calling for change has achieved success in their demands to elect the Egyptian president through a direct poll from among more than one candidate. A call that has been voiced by huge numbers of Egyptians, though many opponent parties were silent about it earlier this month.
Article 76 of the Egyptian constitution was stipulating that the two thirds of the parliament name only one candidate for the presidency, then the appointment of the president is conducted through a poll for yes and no on that one name. The amendment of this article gives the opportunity for several Egyptians as well as parties to submit their candidates for the presidency to elect one of them according to the Egyptian people’s will, in a direct confidential poll.
But, before that, these constitutional amendments should be submitted to public polling before the coming presidential election in September 2005.
