Syria : Releasing more Political Prisoners
15th of December 2004
Within his New reform plan, The Syrian President, Mr. Bashar Al Asad, pardoned 112 Political prisoners. Syrian Resources believe that in the future, this Pardon might include all the Syrian political prisoners.
The presidential Statement declared that the release of those prisoners was based on dealing with their files as tolerant and open as possible. And mentioned that there has been another 20-political prisoners release only one month ago.
Although the released prisoners' names were not announced yet, but there are certain expectations about ending the " political arrestment " in Syria , as it tries to rejoin the international community and enforce political modernization and economic opening-up.
Syria has been declaring the state of emergency since the sixties of the last century, to be (as well as Egypt) on top list of countries with huge number of political prisoners.
