Fourth year 27 July 2007 - 02 August 2007 Jordan ======== Freedom of speech and expression Amman center for human rights studies has reported, as part of its third annual report on media freedoms in the Arab world, the most grievous violations inflicted upon Arab and foreign journalists and media workers in the Arab world during the first half of 2007. Jordan's homepage: http://www.hrinfo.net/jordan/ ========================== Tunisia ======== Freedom of speech and expression Omar elmisteery, editor in chief of the electronic magazine "Kalima" stands before elementary court on 2nd August, for committing libel. Omar face one to three years in prison without regard to civil rights. The story goes back to 5th September 2006 when a complaint filed against the magazine for publishing an essay that criticizes the reinstatement of a lawyer whose license was permanently revoked twice after indicted on fraud charges. Prisoners and detainees 31 political prisoners freed. Human rights watch highlighted their release in a statement and called upon the government to free dozens of other prisoners still behind bars for taking parts in non violent political activities. the statement revealed the fact that most of the released prisoners in 24 Jul ,on Tunisia national day's eve, were about to end their prison term. they were released on parole i.e. they will be rearrested in case they violated the parole terms. The second statement marks the death of a new victim at the hands of religious police. The third sheds lights on the arrest of two prominent reform advocates in the country. Solyman Shaher received a seven year prison sentence for joining a society aims to change the social and economic structure of the country in addition to weakening the national sense of identity which is a felony. Walid Omar Ebrahim sentenced to 5 yeas for conducting unlawful acts, Mahmoud bin Ali sentenced to 7 years with hard labor. The previous sentences were among many the Syrian state security court issued this week against legal and political activists behind bars, some of them remained locked for years, in addition to interrogating another group of detainees before the same court. Iraq's homepage: http://www.hrinfo.net/iraq ========================== Palestine ======== Freedom of speech and expression The Hamas executive force slapped a ban on three newspapers(alhia al jadida, alayam, alkouds) coming from the west-bank and detained the distributors in beit hanoun police station in Gaza strip. Hamas step came as a response to the attacks launched against Hamas on the news papers pages and also for ignoring Hamas achievements in Gaza strip. the story was highlighted in two separate statements, the first issued from el-mezan centre for human rights and the other statement came from the Palestinian centre for human rights who also issued another statement, drawing attention to the Nablus Afak tv break -in led by armed masked group amid shootings, the group went on smashing TV and computer screens and glass windows ,the statement said that the break-in triggered by the violent clashes erupted in al Najah national university, a new series of the Fatah-Hamas chain of violence. Issued a statement concerning a verdict delivered by the administrative judiciary court in which it commits the supreme state security general deputy to accede to the appeal of temporary imprisonment verdict issued by the public deputy against five detainees remaining in prison since last may. Egypt's homepage: http://www.hrinfo.net/egypt ========================== Yemen ======== Prisoners and detainees Hood , For the third time since the American authorities freed four Yemeni detainees called upon the public attorney to send members of the public attorney to the detention centre where the four men were locked ,to witness their unlawful detention as the general attorney decreed for the second time that the former Guantanmo detainees must be sent to the public deputy or released, the political security, despite this decree, is still holding them, in a flagrant mockery of the public deputy, the constitution, and the law. The four detainees are: Fwaz Noman Hamoud, Mouhsin Saleh Fakaan, Sadic Muhamid Saeed and Hany Abdo Muslih. Yemen's homepage: http://www.hrinfo.net/yemen ========================== International and regional ======== Human rights watch concluded in its statement on Iraqi refugees that The Iraqi refugee's situation is ever more devastating despite efforts made by the Syrian authorities and local and international human organizations. The international community response must transcend the mere acceptance of a number of Iraqi asylum seekers. Aid must account for a great part of the solution, in order to put an end to this insurmountably horrible crisis. The poet was indicted for libel against one of the Egyptian extremists, notoriously known for his vehemence enmity towards freedom of expression and speech. The Arabic Network for Human rights in Egypt calls upon advocates of freedom of speech to stand behind Mr.Hegazy and to unite in front of extremism practiced by that sheikh and those who share his extremist views.
