Fourth year 1 June 2007 - 7 June 2007 Bahrain ======== Arrest and Torture Human Rights Watch (HRW) has presented a petition to The Bahraini Interior Minister, demanding information about two detainees, although they did not respond or presented any extra information. During this week, HRW presented a new petition to the King of Bahrain, demanding investigation in torture cases and ill treatments practiced in detention places and hold prosecutions to the officials responsible and all who are involved in these practices. More information about the petition, please visit: http://www.hrinfo.net/mena/hrw/2007/pr0531.shtml Sources ========================== Tunisia ======== Arrests The National Council for Freedoms (Tunisia) issued a press release states the horrible conditions facing the opinion prisoner "Mohammed Abbou" and many other prisoners, victims of the Tunisian authority, held in the civil prison in Al-Kaf City, moreover, the annoyances practiced against his wife and children during their visit. More information about the release, please visit: http://www.hrinfo.net/tunisia/cnlt/2007/pr0531.shtml The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) and the International Association for Protecting Political Prisoners issued two separate releases about the Tunisian journalist "Abdallah Al-Zawary" who lived for 16 years between prisons and exile and known among many of defenders of opinion prisoners as "Nelson Mandela of the Arab world". The situation describes the political injustice and violation of laws, which reflects on the rights of defenders of principal freedoms and the opposition. In addition, all these practices work only for depriving the Tunisian people from practicing their rights. The two organizations ended their releases by calling both Arab and international civil society to help Al-Zawary to gain his freedom and return to his family in the Tunisian capital. They arrested him and sent him to the police station, where they did not investigate with him personally. A court issued sentences against many people, for being members in banned groups, which is the most celebrate accusation. Calling in the first one the Israeli forces and the Palestinian armed forces to stop air raids and random rocket bombs, which kills the civilians and spread the fear in Gaza Strip and North Israel. While the second release states that in the 40s anniversary of Israel's occupation to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the Israeli authorities ordered to stop usurping the territories and putting boundaries on the roads, and many other practices, which violate the international law. The responsible officials then declared that these procedures led to practicing more human rights' violations and failed also to provide security to both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. On the same subject, the National Association for Democracy and Law issued a press release, monitoring the Israeli grave human rights' violations against Palestinian civilians. Moreover, it calls upon the international society for an immediate response to these violations and make efforts to protect the rights of the Palestinian civilians. In addition, forcing Israel to stop its violent practices against civilians and release the prisoners and prisoners of war especially the Palestinian parliament members and ministers and lifting the economic siege on the poor people, driven away from their land which was taken by force witnessed by the whole world. The first one on detaining and torturing around 45 citizens from Armint (South Egypt) including women and children. The victims beaten and tortured by electric shocks and it ends with the death of a person called Said Hassan Mohamed died from torture in Armint Police Station practiced in front of his wife and his 14 years old son. While the second release declares the serious attempts done by El Nadeem and Hisham Mubarak Law Center to find the defendants in an act of torture practiced in Alexandria in August 2006 and send them to prosecution. The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights monitors a torture case led to the death of a person called Abd el Wahab Hussein Ali Hammad in Beny Mohamed Police Station - Abnoub Center (Assiut Governorate). When at 6 am, a group of escorts belong to Beny Mohamed Police Station arrested the victim in his house then he was transferred to the police station where he was detained. Human rights' future in Egypt 34 Egyptian civil society organizations confronted the Head of People's Assembly with the in understandable violation act practiced against the Center for Trade Union and Workers' Services ( NGO) during the two previous months. The act done within a series of abusive administrative and security procedures, starting with closing the center's offices in the governorates and ends with closing its head office on Wednesday, April 25 , 2007. Sources For more information, please visit: http://www.hrinfo.net/morocco ========================== International and Regional ======== Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch separately issued two press releases denouncing the Egyptian government's decision to prevent human rights organizations from monitoring the prosecution of 33 leading figures in the Egyptian Muslim Brothers Group. The two organizations in their releases, describing the government's claiming that the civilians will have just prosecutions before military courts. Sources For more information, please visit: http://www.hrinfo.net/mena ========================== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information ======== Two lawyers of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) visited the blogger Kareem Amer in Borg El Arab Prison in Alexandria, who was sentenced to four years in prison in an opinion case. The visit was to examine his well being and support him. HRinfo denounces the commissioner' s decision of provisional detention against Amer for 65 days (since 4 March until 8 May 2007), although it wasn't a disciplinary decision and considered a violation to the law. The punishment was finished due to a visit done by Alexandria prosecution, in which it calls for treating Amer the same way as the other prisoners. Being a member in Kareem's Amer's defense team, HRinfo declared the fact that Amer has no relation or contacts with the donations collected by some groups (locally or internationally) for his sake and he didn't ask for donations from persons or institutions.
