A seminar on Judicial Independence and Neutrality in Jordan

A two-day seminar titled "Judicial Independence and Neutrality in Jordan" was held in Amman by the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Human Rights in cooperation with Amman Center for Human Rights and sponsored by the European Commission, Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), and Belgian Ministry of Justice.

    Bahrain
    ========
    Before you speak, go and dig your grave!

    This threat was revealed by a Bahraini woman while taking to a TV show about the harsh treatment of her ex-husband who is working as a police officer. She was threatened to be imprisoned with the charge of defamation. Bahrain Center for Human Rights and The Women's Petition Committee condemned the frightening and pressuring practiced on the lady who uses her basic right of freedom of expression. The two organizations called upon Bahraini authorities to drop the charges of defamation leveled against her.

    Bahrain Society for Human Rights

    Bahrain Society for Human Rights (BSHR) and NGOs Network for Development held a program for spreading awareness with democracy in Bahrain, this week. BSHR also issued a press release to call upon the US government to close Guantanamo prison and release all the prisoners including Bahraini prisoners.

    Tunisia
    ========
    Delivering the Dead Bodies

    National Council on Liberties is highly concerned with the torture of dozens of youth who were arrested secretly from different areas in Tunisia, during the last few weeks. The council mentioned in its press release issued this week that the Tunisian authorities had secretly delivered the dead corps of two citizens to their families.

    The international campaign for human rights in Tunisia issued a press release to condemn the broad arrests of citizens by Tunisian authorities.

    The International Association for the Support of Political Prisoners condemned the targeting of young citizens and abusing them morally and physically.

    Arrests

    State Security Service arrested a doctor in Halab. That is in addition to the ongoing repression practices against political and human rights activists.

    Media freedom

    MADA Center reported on six violations committed against journalists during the first half of January and condemned such practices of armed Palestinian groups and Israeli occupation forces.

    Colonial Expansion

    Al-Quds Center for Democracy and Human Rights issued a press release in response to the announcement of a bid to build 44 housing units in Maaliat Adomim Province, eastern Jerusalem. The center considered such project a serious threat to the whole city and called upon the local and international human rights organizations to condemn such practices.

    Lebanon
    ========
    Palestinian Association for Human Rights (RASID) reported on the armed clashes between El-Sham Soldiers group and elements from the Lebanese Army, on 11 January 2007. The clashes frightened the civilians and school children.

    Torture and Impunity

    One of the successful achievements of civil society and bloggers is the disclosing of the methodological torture practices of Egyptian police against ordinary citizens. Five press releases from thirteen human rights organizations handled the arrest of Al-Jazeera journalist who was arrested while preparing a TV show on torture in Egypt. In addition, the Association for Human Rights Legal Aid launched a campaign to bring the officers, responsible for the murder of Mohamed Abdul Kader as a result of torture, to justice.     Freedom of Expression

    The general manager of Nichane magazine, Edris Casecas and the journalist Sanaa Al-Agy were sentenced for three years and the magazine was burdened with a fine of 80000 Dirham. Moreover, the magazine will be confiscated for two months. Reporters without borders and the Moroccan Association for Human Rights condemned the sentence.

    ========
    Reporters without Borders sent a letter to the King of Bahrain to protest on the bloking of HRinfo website in Bahrain.

    Amnesty International writes to USA government to express its concerns towards the reports declaring that no less than 30 civilians were killed in the recent air attacks in southern Somalia.

    In the fifth anniversary of establishing Guantanamo prison, amnesty international gathered millions of people to call for its closure.

    Civil Aid Organization also called for the closure of Guantanamo prison and releasing the Sudanese prisoners there.

    First: Kareem Amer will be trialed tomorrow by at Moharam Bek Misdemeanor Court in Alexandria:
    Unexpectedly, the Public Prosecutor referred the claim of the Egyptian Blogger Abdul Kareem Nabeil Suleiman (internet name: Kareem Amer) to Moharam Bek Misdemeanor Court in Alexandria. Thereupon, Kareem will be trialed tomorrow morning by the said court in case no. 887/2006. Kareem is the first Egyptian blogger to be plainly trailed for his secular writings published on his own weblog http://karam903.blogspot.com. The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information calls upon freedom of expression advocators in Egypt and all over the globe to support Kareem Amer in his prospected trial based on biased investigations by the Public Prosecutor.

    Second: Human Rights Publications in Cairo International Book Fair:
    The human rights organizations in Egypt were granted an opportunity to exhibit and exchange their publications in the next Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF). The National Association of Human Rights (NAHR) shall reserve Exhibition Hall no. 4 titled "Human Rights Research and Legal Information Center" for this purpose. The next CIBF will start on 25 January, at Exhibitions Ground in Nasr City, Cairo.
    This opportunity will help Egyptian human rights organizations to exhibit, sell, and communicate with their audience in a broad way.
    For human rights organizations interested in participation, please send copies of your publications to NAHR headquarter with a symbolic subscription fee of 200 L.E. Subscribing organizations have to identify whether their books are for selling or for free.

    Covering up Torture is the Crime; and not disclosing it
    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemns the investigation with Howayda Taha, Al-Jazeera TV Journalist. Taha is accused of possessing footages documenting torture in Egypt in order to be shown in a TV show by Al-Jazeera. Security forces confiscated the videotapes while Taha was on her way to Doha, Qatar last week.

    State Security Prosecutor convicted Taha, yesterday, with two charges: filming scenes which may harm the national interests of the country, and possessing and transferring false footages which incorrectly describes the situation in Egypt!!
