Amman Center for Human Rights held three events this week. The first event was celebrating the publishing of the fifth issue of "Electoral Observer" newsletter by Arab Network for the Supervision of Elections. In cooperation with Committees to Defend Democratic Freedoms and Human Rights in Syria, the center concluded a training seminar on supervising elections for Syrian NGOs. The third event is the conclusion of an educational seminar held in cooperation with Al El Beit University in the field of human rights. The seminar included 25 participants and continued for three days.

    Bahrain
    ========
    Torture

    Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights issued a press release to condemn the misuse of power by Ministry of Interior and torturing detainees to confess false conventions. The Society also issued a detailed report on the results of elections supervision which took place in the Islamic National Wefaq Association.

    Who plans for a sectarian war in Bahrain?

    Under the same title, Bahrain Center for Human Rights issued a report on a confidential study by Dr. Nezar El-Aany and a member of the House of Representatives and implemented by Bahrain Authority with the purpose to marginalize Shiites economically, socially, and politically.     Tunisia
    ========
    More tyranny

    Authorities dig deeper into repressing the Tunisian League (LTDH). They prevented the bond form practicing its internal activities and besieged the central headquarter of the bond on Sunday 7 January 2007. The league is astonished by the media blackout by authorities in respect with armed clashed that took place in Tunisia at the end of the last year.

    Syria
    ========
    The main topics handled by Syrian human rights organizations, this week, included the situation of Syrian refugees in Iraq and arresting and murdering some of them, the detention and release of Ali Shehaby and other Syrian citizens.

    Palestine

    Freedom of Expression violations

    MADA center reported on the violations of freedom of expression in December 2006. Reporters without Borders is relieved by releasing AFP photographer after one week of abduction. Al-Mizan center also welcomed the release of the journalist and condemned the violent practices against media members.

    Security loose

    Many organizations commented on the security chaos in occupied territories and called for an open dialogue with HAMAS and Fath to limit the expansion of such dangerous phenomenon.

    Egypt

    Refusing the founding of 12 new parties

    The supreme administrative court of State Council refused to license 12 new parties, according to Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and Arab Foundation for Civil Society and Human Rights. The two organizations issued separate press releases to condemn what they called "freedoms massacre and murder of parties" in Egypt.

    Torture

    Association for Human Rights Legal Aid launched a legal campaign to catch torturers. Al-Nadeem Center is highly concerned by the ongoing brutality of police in dealing with ordinary citizens.

    Morocco
    ========
    Rape

    Moroccan Association for Human Rights condemned the raping and torturing of citizen Hanaa Al-Taswoly by State Security Policemen in Fas state. This disturbing violation took place while interrogating the victim who was convicted with steeling her master's property.

    Solidarity Campaign

    The Moroccan Association for Human Rights also launched a campaign in solidarity with the two political prisoners Ahmed Shahied and Ahmed El-Shaib. The prisoners are still under hunger strike since 4 January 2006. They are imprisoned since almost 25 years ago.

    Freedom of Expression

    Working Group on Press Freedom and Free Expression in North Africa (WGFENA) called for eliminating the claims filed by Moroccan authorities against Nichane newspaper.

    Regional and International
    ========
    Guantenamo

    As the fifth anniversary of the Guantanamo Bay detention center approaches, Human Rights Watch denounced the ongoing detentions there as a shameful blight on US respect for human rights. Human Rights Watch called on the Bush administration to bring criminal charges or release the nearly 400 detainees, and restore their access to federal court.

    Arabic Network for Human Rights Information
    ========
    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information is highly concerned by the claim filed by a feudal family calling for imprisoning the publisher, author, and activist of "From the Papers of Shahenda Mekled" book, in addition to confiscating the book.

    Humum Update
    ========
    The problems of identity acquisition and declaring nationality are apparently the most widespread in the Arab region. Humum.net has recently received a complaint from citizen Mohamed Raga Ahmed on the same issue.
